Powdery Mildew is a problem that has started to become serious, in some areas, for indoor gardeners. It is a fungus disease that is spread by airborne spores which occur in great numbers and are just about everywhere. There is no doubt that once Powdery Mildew becomes established in an area, it will spread to nearly every grower, given time.. It first appears as a white powdery substance on the leaf surface. The white substance is the fungus’s mycelium which is its equivalent of a plant’s branches. As the fungus grows over the leaf’ surface, it sends roots down into the leaf cells and sucks the cell contents out. These cells die after the fungus has finished with them.

Usually, you will notice it first on the upper surface of the leaf but it also occurs just as much on the underside of the leaf. There a number of different types of Powdery Mildew but they all look similar and attack the plant in the same way.

Powdery Mildew is very destructive and will kill most of the plant’s leaves and so reduces crop. Unfortunately, by the time you see the fungus, damage has already occurred.

The biggest problem with controlling Powdery mildew is that it loves the same conditions that indoor gardeners provide for their plants so preventing it by changing the environment is not really an option. There are some chemicals available and one non chemical product to control Powdery Mildew. Preventative sprays are better than curative ones.

If you apply a spray to control Powdery Mildew after the disease is present, you may find that the leaves appear to have been killed by the product. This is not actually the case. What happens is that the fungus keeps the leaves alive while it is feeding in them. When you kill the fungus, it stops keeping the leaf alive and the damaged parts of the leaf die.

If you have had Powdery Mildew in the past then it is a good idea to apply a preventative treatment right from the start.

See your retailer for advice on suitable treatments.

Fungus Gnats (aka Sciarid Fly)

Fungus Gnats are a huge problem in the nursery industry, especially in greenhouses and now, also, in indoor growing.

The adults are small black colored flies, about 3 millimetres long (1/8 “) that prefer to walk rather than fly, although they are quite capable of flight and that’s how they get from place to place. They are usually found on the surface of a damp medium and also in areas that are equally wet. They are most often found in cocopeat and soil media but also in NFT and other inert run to waste systems.

They lay their eggs in the soil. The larvae, which are clear colored with black heads, eat organic material and are particularly fond of plant roots. They are 1/24th” to 1/8th “ (one to three millimetres) and live in the medium amongst the plants roots. After the maggots have eaten their fill of roots, they then pupate for a few days before hatching into adults, mating and starting the cycle all over again by laying eggs. From egg to adult takes about three weeks at 72oF (22oC), more in cooler conditions and quicker in warmer conditions.

They cause damage to plant roots by feeding on them. Unfortunately, this damage exposes the plant roots to attack by fungal disease. The maggots also carry fungal diseases so they help spread root diseases as well as damaging roots. In one study, the maggots were shown to be carrying the spores of the diseases Pythium, Botrytis, Verticillium, Fusarium and Thielaviopsis. Even without the added pressure of diseases, roots damaged in this way can’t take up water and nutrients. If the plants are in flower, root growth has virtually stopped in favor of flowering so the plants can’t easily replace damaged roots.

Control is not easy but there is at least one good product available that is non toxic and will control these pests.

Ask your retailer for the best control.

This pest has to be one of the most damaging to plant leaves that indoor gardeners have to cope with. They are become more and more persistent as growers become more inclined to keep their gardens growing all year round.

There are a number of species of mite that attack indoor grown plants but the one you are most likely to see is the “two spotted” mite, sometimes called “red spider” mite. This confusion in names comes from two different phases of the mite’s life cycle. During cold conditions, the mites turn red, hence the name “red spider” mite. Normally, they are a pale brown, almost clear colour with two prominent spots on each side and toward the front of their bodies. The “spider” part of the name comes from the web they spin on the underside of the leaves. They are also distantly related to spiders and scorpions. In severe infestations, the webbing can nearly cover the whole plant. This webbing gives them some protection from predators and unfavorable environmental conditions.

They damage plant leaves by piercing plant cells and feeding on the sap, thus destroying them. Even in mild cases, the damage they do remove the leaf’s protective covering, opening up the possibility of environmental damage, e.g. from UV light or from a spray a grower might apply to try and control the mites. The damage appears, at first, as lighter colored flecks on the leaf, progressing to larger yellow spots and finally bronzing and death of the leaf.

Spider mites develop from eggs, which usually are laid near the veins of leaves. The eggs are round and large in proportion to the size of the mite. They develop rapidly during the warm conditions found in a grow room, becoming full-grown in as little as a week after eggs hatch. After mating, mature females may produce a dozen eggs daily for about two weeks. The fast development rate and high egg production can lead to extremely rapid increases in mite populations.

Spider mites like dry conditions, which is why they grow and spread so rapidly in a hot grow room when humidity is low. They feed more under dry conditions, as the lower humidity allows them to evaporate excess water that they take in when they feed on plant sap.

Although some growers successfully use predator mites for control he main method of control is by applying a miticide. This can be either a toxic agricultural chemical or a relatively safe non toxic plant based oil. The main thing is to start early. Don’t let the mites breed up into any numbers. The damage they will do will be irreversible. Be vigilant and start your control measures early.

See your retailer for a good safe, non toxic treatment.

Lack of space is the main reason gardening does not appeal to most people. The world is getting smaller as the population continuous to grow and different infrastructures continue to sprout. Having not enough space, people learn to maximize the space they have. Most of them cannot afford to dedicate a space for gardening as much as they want to grow ornaments or their own vegetable crops.

However, lack of space can’t be much of a dilemma in today’s world. Gardening has actually long been made within reach of garden enthusiasts who have very little space, if not totally out of space, outdoors. Anyone can have a garden of his own through hydroponics gardening. This method traces its roots way back in the 19th century and can be done in different techniques depending on the kind of plants that will be planted.

Hydroponics gardening is basically a method of growing plants without using soil. In the method, nutrients solutions and water are used in place of soil. However, setting up a hydroponic garden is not as simple as it may seem. To be able to achieve success, one should be completely knowledgeable on how hydroponics works.

The dynamics of hydroponics can be complicated but CX Hydroponics is here to make the whole process of setting up a hydroponics garden a lot easier using their nutrients solutions. CX Hydroponics is committed to provide a system that would achieve maximum results that is why it has developed its own and unique system of crop nutrition called Fusion Nutrition.

The success of hydroponics garden mainly depends on the hydroponic nutrients. In the conventional way of planting using soil, plants get essential nutrients from soil. Needless to say, in hydroponics, the plants would get the nutrients they need from nutrients dissolved in the water.

The quality of hydroponic nutrients plays a major role in achieving a productive garden. To ensure the healthy growth of plants, hydroponic nutrients should contain all the necessary elements. The primary elements include calcium, magnesium and potassium among others.

Using commercial garden fertilizers is a no-no when it comes to hydroponics gardening. Commercial garden fertilizers have been developed for soil-based plants. Obviously, they would not be able to completely provide the nutrients a hydroponic plant would need.

While hydroponic nutrients play a very important role, caution should be applied during their application. Different plants require different solutions. When the plants meet these blended elements, some sort of reaction would occur. When the solutions used are not balanced, possible results would be too high salt concentration, depleted nutrients and ph could deviate from the normal status required.

With CX Hydroponics’ discovery, its very own Fusion Nutrition system, their hydroponic nutrients are guaranteed to serve their purpose and that is to help any crop reach its maximum potential.
